Personal Auto Insurance
If your car is ever destroyed or damaged, having the proper auto insurance policy can help get you back on the road quickly. Your auto insurance policy may also provide protection for legal and medical expenses resulting from injury, loss of life, or property damage due to an accident involving your automobile.
Auto Insurance Coverages
As you look through your auto insurance policy, you will see information about different coverages. Let's clarify a few of the more common ones.
Liability
Automotive liability insurance is coverage for damages that you cause to a third party or their property while driving a vehicle. It does not extend coverage to you, your vehicle, or other property. It does not carry a deductible.
Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist Coverage (BI/PD)
This coverage type comes into play when the driver or owner of a vehicle either does not have enough insurance or no insurance at all. It provides coverage for you, the occupants in your and the insured's vehicle, and your resident relatives, up to the limits you have selected in your policy.
Medical Payments
Medical payments or "MedPay" is optional coverage. It pays for medical and funeral expenses (in the event of a covered auto accident) for people insured under the policy.
Personal Injury Protection
Personal injury protection, or "PIP," covers people in the insured vehicle and also pedestrians that are hit by the insured vehicle. The expenses covered are for hospitalization, other medical care, and funeral expenses, regardless of fault.
Collision Insurance
When a collision with another object causes damage to your vehicle, collision insurance has you covered. It pays for repairs up to the car's fair market value, (less your insurance deductible).
Comprehensive Insurance
Comprehensive insurance covers non-collision damage to your vehicle. Examples are if your car is vandalized or stolen. Natural disasters, falling objects, civil disturbance, and fire are also usually covered by comprehensive car insurance. Like collision, comprehensive will pay up to your car's fair market value (less your insurance deductible).
